Princess Eugenie had to enlist the help of a police officer after she managed to lose her Royal Protection security guards half way through on her night out in Newcastle.

The 19-year-old princess, who is a fresher at Newcastle University, was forced to approach a regular policeman when she lost her security. She looked obviously concerned as she was taken to the Gate entertainment complex where her bodyguards were waiting for her.

The young royal embarked on a three-year Combined Studies degree in English literature, history of art and politics at Newcastle. Her residence will cost a £96-a-week halls of residence, but the cost of providing security for her has already caused controversy.

Princess Eugenie has a good reason for her to have a bodyguard when a knife was pulled at a party she recently attended.

The 19-year-old princess and her university friends had been partying at the China Gorilla rave at the Liquid Nation nightclub in Notting Hill, West London. They were invited back to an impromptu after-party at a house in nearby Westbourne Park.

The mood changed after a scuffle broke out between two male guests and a knife was brandished. Fortunately, Princess Eugenie left minutes before the fight broke out. The source thought that it would be better if the young royal had been there so her policeman could have broken up the fight.

Princess Eugenie, who previously started her university life, has bodyguards, who caused a security alert at Newcastle University after accidentally set off an alarm.

The young princess’ protection officers moved her belongings to £96-a-week room when they bumped into a newly-installed panic button, which prompted a security alert causing several police officers to the halls of residence.

Princess Eugenie was recently spotted as she headed to an induction class with a friend from her old school as well as a bodyguard standing discreetly behind her. She wore an outfit from high street stores Topshop and American Apparel.

Princess Eugenie begins university on September 24 as she is due to move into her £96-a-week halls of residence at Newcastle University this afternoon.

The 19-year princess is set to attend her first classes next week when she pursued a degree in English and History of Art. She will be guarded by royal officers but she is keen to experience the “student lifestyle.”

She is set to have a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, single bed, wardrobe, desk and chest of drawers. She will share a living room and kitchen with five others.

Princess Eugenie was believed to have a private word from her mother, Sarah Ferguson because of her partying.

It was reported that the young princess had been clubbing in Ibiza with notorious party girl Jade Jagger. The recent partying was claimed to not go well with her father Prince Andrew, who was getting quite concerned about the company the young princess is keeping.

The Duchess of York told Princess Eugenie to be careful about who she is pictured with. The young princess is currently holidaying with her sister and the Queen at Balmoral, but her mother has been excluded.

Her family home is a 775-room palace. But Princess Eugenie has opted for something more modest when she embarks on life as a student at Newcastle University next month.

The Queen’s granddaughter has taken up a place in a £96-a-week hall of residence.

Eugenie, 19, who is sixth in line to the throne, will have her own small en suite bedroom with a single bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and desk.

She will share a lounge and kitchen with five fellow students. The kitchen has its own cooker, microwave, fridge, kettle and toaster, plus an ironing board and vacuum cleaner.

Eugenie insisted she wanted to muck in with fellow students – unlike her sister Beatrice, who turned down digs at London’s Goldsmiths College last September and move into a grace-and-favour apartment in St James’s Palace.

Beatrice, 21, had argued that it would save taxpayers’ money because it would cut down on the cost of her security.

It subsequently emerged, however, that the four-bedroomed apartment had been refurbished for Beatrice at a cost of £256,000 to the public purse.

Eugenie’s decision to study at the Tyneside university will prove to be equally costly because, like her sister, she is guarded round the clock by a team of Metropolitan Police bodyguards costing more than £250,000 a year.

A team will now have to relocate to Newcastle. Last month, two detectives travelled to the city with the princess to look around the campus and inspect her future accommodation.

It is likely that Eugenie will have one bodyguard sleeping in her flat plus two living off campus as ‘back-up’. Each team of officers will be replaced by fresh personnel every ten days or so.

Eugenie plans to study for a BA in English and history of art.

The university has become popular among the Sloaney set and several of Eugenie’s friends are understood to be going with her.

Fortunately for the party-loving princess, it also boasts one of the best student social scenes in the country with six bars to chose from.

Eugenie achieved two As in her A levels in art and English literature and a B in history of art. Her gap year saw her partying in places as far flung as Australia, South Africa, Cambodia and Goa.

A friend said: ‘She chose Newcastle because it offered a great degree course and it seems a really fun place to go.

‘Eugenie is a very down to earth girl who hates using her title and she was adamant that she wanted to live in halls with her friends. She just wants to be treated like any other undergraduate.

‘The issue of police protection is totally out of her hands. She hates it as much as anyone.’

A university spokesman refused to comment.

Eugenie is not the first royal of her generation to take up a place in halls of residence. Prince William spent his first year in university accommodation when he went to St Andrews.

Princess Eugenie had a battle behind the scenes with her mother over her decision to go to Newcastle University.

Dubbed the ‘brainiest Royal’ after getting AAB grades at A-level, I’m told Eugenie, 19, was urged by the Duchess to consider a university higher up the league table such as St Andrews, where Prince William studied, or Bristol.

But Newcastle has the highest density of students from her public-school crowd. A source said: ‘Eugenie believes that uni is as much about the socializing as the studying.’

Princess Eugenie will start a three-year degree course at Newcastle University in the autumn, according to a report.

The 19-year-old royal will study for a BA in English and history of art but it is not yet known whether she will take up a place in one of the university’s halls of residence.

Although the Geordie city seems an incongruous choice for a member of the Royal Family, the university has become incredibly popular amongst the Sloaney set in recent years and several of her friends are understood to be going with her.

The Queen’s granddaughter spent the day yesterday looking around the university campus and examining possible halls of residence accommodation with her police protection detail.

En-suite rooms in the college’s halls of residence cost between £84 and £119 per week.

A friend said: ‘ She’s very excited about heading off there in September. She chose Newcastle because it offered a great degree course and it seems a really fun place to go.’

Buckingham Palace declined to comment last night.

Eugenie, the younger daughter of the Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson, will study under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The university is home to more than 18,000 students from more than 100 countries and occupies a 50-acre site at the heart of Newcastle city centre.

Alumni include journalist Kate Adie, comedian Rowan Atkinson and singer Bryan Ferry.

Fortunately for party-loving Eugenie, who is sixth in line to the throne, Newcastle boasts one of the best student social scenes in the country with more than 130 student societies and six student union bars to choose from.

Eugenie, who studied at exclusive Marlborough College, a £23,000-a-year boarding school in Wiltshire, officially became the brainiest member of the Royal Family by scoring two As in her A-levels last summer, in art and English literature, as well as a B in history of art.

She went on to enjoy a highly controversial gap year which saw her partying in places as far flung as Australia, India, South Africa and Cambodia.

Earlier this year, the Queen’s granddaughter was spotted sunbathing topless on the beach in Thailand followed by a raucous night dancing on a table in a bar.

The security bill for her trips came to an estimated £100,000.

Eugenie will continue to receive a police guard throughout her time at Newcastle, which will almost certainly mean at least one officer will need to live next door to her, regardless of whether she chooses a room in a hall of residence or a private house.

Princess Eugenie’s pals are urging her to join them in a reality TV show based on the US hit The Hills, which follows the lives of spoilt, rich teenagers.

The Chelsea set, including Princess Eugenie’s old flame Hugo Taylor, completed a pilot episode for MTV last week, but the 19-year-old Royal is unlikely to take part.

“Her sister [Princess] Beatrice was asked last year but refused and Eugenie will probably do the same,” says a source.

“Hugo has been trying to persuade her to take part but she knows it would be unbecoming for a Royal to be seen to be flaunting wealth or indulging in the petty dramas that the show’s format demands.”

MTV bosses will decide whether to commission the show next week.

Princess Eugenie enjoys her first solo job as a Royal – at a trendy West London club.

The 19-year-old princess met England footballer Frank Lampard at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge.

The club – whose song is Blue Is The Colour – were hosting footballers with Down’s syndrome visiting from Hong Kong.

Prince Andrew’s youngest daughter – sixth in line to the throne – also hosted a lunch at Kensington Palace.

The Princess capped her big day with a visit to the Royal Academy of Arts.
